Boothbay Harbor Itinerary: How to Spend 1, 2, or 3 Days

Boothbay Harbor Itinerary: An Overview
How Many Days Do You Need in Boothbay Harbor?
Boothbay Harbor is a small coastal Maine town. I have visited Boothbay Harbor multiple times from Massachusetts, and the best itinerary can depend on what else you are doing in your trip. If you are planning a longer Maine road trip with multiple stops, you might have only one day in Boothbay Harbor. That is totally fine if you want to see the highlights.
My personal recommendation is that two days is ideal for seeing the highlights of Boothbay Harbor without feeling rushed. Three days or more gives you enough time to slow down and explore some of the surrounding areas, including Georgetown and Five Islands. It also allows you to make stops on the way up to Boothbay Harbor. A popular stop from Massachusetts is Freeport, Maine.
Our Boothbay Harbor Trip
My most recent trip to Boothbay Harbor was in the summer of 2026. We travelled to Boothbay Harbor in July. The trip was for four adults: my husband, my parents, and me. So, we took a slower trip and opted for two nights to explore at a leisurely pace. We stayed at the Boothbay Harbor Inn, and from there we were able to walk to many of the restaurants and downtown attractions.
Quick Look at the 1-, 2-, and 3-Day Itineraries
Depending on how much time you have for your trip, I would recommend the following itineraries:
1 Day: Boothbay Harbor highlights. Stick to the main attractions in the Boothbay Harbor area. Short activities are preferable so you do not take up the whole day doing one thing. Have a leisurely breakfast and then walk along the footbridge and visit the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Later, explore the downtown shops and have a waterfront dinner.
2 Days: Two days gives you more time for the gardens. You can also add waterfront activities like visiting Barrett Park or nearby Southport.
3 Days: Three days gives you more time to explore neighboring peninsulas and scenic drives. Visit the neighboring areas of Georgetown and Five Islands to see a real working lobster wharf. It also allows for stops on the way up or down from Boothbay Harbor. Many people like to stop at LL Bean in Freeport, Maine.
1-Day Boothbay Harbor Itinerary
Start With Breakfast at Red Cup Coffeehouse
Start the morning with coffee and breakfast at Red Cup Coffeehouse. The menu is extensive and includes hot and cold coffee and tea, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and baked goods. There is a walk-up window to order from and a small number of tables on the sidewalk. You can take your breakfast across the street to enjoy at the picnic tables along the harbor.
Walk the Boothbay Harbor Footbridge
After breakfast, walk across the historic footbridge and explore the waterfront. The footbridge is a pedestrian bridge that connects the downtown to the east side. The footbridge allows you to walk to and from hotels and businesses easily. There are several viewing areas with benches that are set away from the main path so you can stop to admire the views and take it all in at a leisurely pace.

Spend a Few Hours at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
Visit the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and allow enough time to explore rather than trying to rush through it. This is the largest botanical garden in New England. Highlights of the garden include the giant wooden trolls, the children’s garden and fairy village, and themed gardens like the rose and dahlia gardens. Because of its size and your limited time on a 1-day itinerary, it is best to prioritize what you want to see during your time here. For example, if you really want to see the trolls, you can prioritize a short hike to see 1-2 of them instead of trying to find all 5.
Take a Boat Tour or Harbor Cruise
If your schedule allows, take one of the boat excursions available from Boothbay Harbor. Balmy Days Cruises offers some short 1-hour harbor tours that can fit into a tighter schedule but still allow time on the water. Head to the second level of the mailboat tour for the best views from the boat during the Scenic Mailboat Tour (Squirrel Island Ferry), which runs every 1.5 hours or so.
Have Lunch With a Harbor View
Have lunch along the water at one of the many restaurants in the Boothbay Harbor downtown area.
The Boathouse Bistro has three floors of seating. On a nice day, head to the third-floor open-air deck for the best views. Even if you prefer a lighter lunch, it’s a place you can stop for a beer and some tapas and still have room for dinner.
The Fisherman’s Wharf Tavern is right along the water. There are also options here for a lighter lunch like soup and salad or shared bites.
For more on restaurants in the Boothbay Harbor area, check out this restaurant guide.
Browse the Shops and Walk Along the Waterfront
This one-day schedule has already been quite full of activity. I would recommend taking some time to explore the downtown area, walk around, browse the local shops, and enjoy the harbor. Don’t over-schedule this part of the day. There are also many areas along the piers where you can stop and sit and take in the views and ocean air.

Have a Classic Maine Lobster Dinner
If you are looking for a classic lobster dinner, head to the Boothbay Lobster Wharf. Here you can dine on a working lobster wharf while watching local fishermen take in their hauls. There are plenty of options here for non-seafood lovers as well, including vegetarian options and other meats like chicken.
Finish With Ice Cream or a Maine Whoopie Pie
End the day at Harbor Treats or Downeast Ice Cream Factory. Harbor Treats has assorted ice creams and desserts like the classic Maine whoopie pie. The Downeast Ice Cream Factory serves handcrafted small-batch ice cream in 65 flavors! There are plenty of picnic tables located outside here, or you can take it and stroll back to your hotel.

Late Morning: Explore Southport
Take the scenic drive toward Southport and stop at Cozy’s Dockside for lunch or an early meal. Southport is only about 4.5 miles from Boothbay Harbor and offers a scenic oceanfront drive. Cozy’s is a casual place with outdoor seating, which makes it an ideal place to enjoy a waterfront meal.
Afternoon: Barrett Park or More Coastal Exploration
Spend the afternoon exploring another coastal area, walking along the water, or visiting one of the attractions you didn’t have time for on Day 1. Barrett Park is a public park. You can bring a blanket or a lawn chair and relax along the grass. In the summer months, you can swim here as well.

Head back to Boothbay Harbor for dinner and one final walk along the harbor.
3-Day Boothbay Harbor Itinerary
Day 1: Explore Boothbay Harbor

Keep the same itinerary as above. Start with the Red Cup Coffeehouse or another breakfast spot. Walk the footbridge after breakfast and enjoy the harbor views from one of the viewing spots. Check out the downtown waterfront and its many souvenir shops and galleries.

Spend the afternoon at the gardens and then return to the harbor.

Drive to Southport and enjoy the coastal scenery.
Evening: Dinner in Boothbay Harbor
Return to Boothbay Harbor for dinner.
Day 3: Georgetown, Five Islands, and Freeport
Morning: Drive to Georgetown
Head toward Georgetown and explore the peninsula and coastal scenery. Georgetown is about 33 miles away from Boothbay Harbor down another peninsula. Reid State Park has a daily entrance fee charged per person, per day. It is open from 9 am through sunset. Reid State Park has long, wide sandy beaches. There are also hiking trails here.
Visit Five Islands Lobster Co.
Stop at Five Islands Lobster Co. for a quintessential Maine coastal experience. They are open most days in the summer for lunch and dinner. You can watch the lobsters being pulled directly from the harbor and then prepared on the wharf. The Love Nest Grill serves casual food like seafood baskets and grilled sandwiches. There is also a small ice cream shop here.

Stop at Georgetown Pottery
Visit Georgetown Pottery while you’re in the area. There is a working pottery studio here as well as unique handmade gifts. There is quite a variety of wares here from dinnerware and mugs to vases and lighting. There are also other unique items from Maine artisans sold in their showrooms.

Continue to Freeport
If you are traveling back toward the Portland area or south, make Freeport a stop along the way. A trip to Maine is not complete without stopping at the huge L.L. Bean Factory outlet, which is actually multiple different stores with clothing, camping gear, hiking gear, etc. Freeport is also home to many outlet stores in a quaint little town. There is also the Maine Beer Company here if you are looking for a longer pit stop.
Freeport works particularly well as a departure-day stop rather than something you need to dedicate an entire day to. If you are traveling with men, you know what I mean! They are not going to have the patience to let the women shop here all day, even with the beer and comfortable Adirondack chairs to sit in outside.

Where to Stay in Boothbay Harbor
Stay Near Downtown for the Easiest Access
Staying close to downtown makes this itinerary easier, particularly if you want to walk to restaurants and the waterfront. Because of the shorter nature of this trip, it is helpful to leave the car at your hotel and walk to shops and restaurants. We were able to walk everywhere in the downtown area from our hotel, including the free trolley and catching the boat tours from the piers.
Our Stay at the Boothbay Harbor Inn
The Boothbay Harbor Inn is a relaxed place. It is not luxurious, but the rooms were comfortable and so convenient right at the entrance to the footbridge. The rooms all have a couple of chairs set up outside them, which we did use one night for happy hour. There is also a lawn with more chairs set up and a fire pit. The lounge area in the main building serves coffee and other drinks that you can help yourself to.

Its location near the footbridge was convenient for walking to restaurants and exploring Boothbay Harbor.
Where to Eat During Your Boothbay Harbor Itinerary
Breakfast
I would recommend Red Cup Coffeehouse and Harbor Treats for quick and easy breakfasts. Kelly’s Cafe is also a good option if you want more of a sit-down breakfast experience.
Lunch
The Boathouse Bistro or Fisherman’s Wharf Tavern are both good choices for smaller lunches like tapas or shared appetizers.
Dinner
I would recommend a couple of choices depending on the experience that you want:
- Boothbay Lobster Wharf for classic lobster
- Harborside 1901 for a nicer dinner
- Cozy’s Dockside for a more casual meal

Tips for Planning Your Boothbay Harbor Trip
The Best Time to Visit Boothbay Harbor
My experience in visiting during the month of July (2x) is that weather variations can be expected even during the summer months. Both times I visited, I needed a sweatshirt or warm layer during the cooler days and nights. Summer is going to be warmer, but being on the water will probably be cooler. Fall is also a wonderful time to visit. The weather will be much cooler, but the fall foliage is beautiful.
How to Get Around Boothbay Harbor
The downtown area and many inns are walkable, and the best way to get around without worrying about finding parking. There is also a free trolley that you can ride, which takes about an hour to fully complete, but there are stops along the way. For example, if you wanted to get on the trolley downtown and get off and stop at Barrett Park, that is easy to do. You’ll want a car for Southport, Georgetown, and Freeport.

Do You Need a Car in Boothbay Harbor?
You can explore the central harbor area without driving much, but a car becomes very useful if you want to explore the surrounding coast.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
In my experience traveling during the summer but on a weekday, we did not have to book far in advance. We only booked the trip a couple of weeks ahead of time. Our most recent trip was during the Fourth of July holiday week, but it was before the long weekend. We did not experience many wait times or problems in getting to restaurants that did not take reservations. I booked a boat tour on the same day we took it, only a couple of hours beforehand.
What Should You Pack for Boothbay Harbor?
Layers and a sweatshirt are needed for cool evenings, even during a summer trip. Waterproof jackets or boat shoes are also helpful if you are planning on doing a lot of boat tours while you are in town. Of course, since there is a lot of sun exposure, sunscreen is a must as well.
Can You Visit Boothbay Harbor as Part of a Maine Road Trip?
Boothbay Harbor can easily fit into a larger Maine itinerary, particularly when combining it with Freeport.
Final Thoughts on Our Boothbay Harbor Itinerary
My personal recommendation for a short 1-3 day itinerary:
1 day: See the highlights of Boothbay Harbor.
2 days: The ideal amount of time for most visitors.
3 days: Give yourself more breathing room and explore Georgetown/Five Islands, with Freeport added as part of your journey into or out of the area.
Boothbay Harbor is a nice coastal town and extremely relaxing place to spend a few days. In my opinion, it is best enjoyed at a slower pace rather than trying to check off every attraction.
